BACKGROUND: The significance of omental infarction (OI) is as a rare differential diagnosis to a very common surgical presentation. In this age of CT-aided diagnosis, previously under-recognized conditions are gaining wider attention. However, owing to predominantly conservative management, the incidence of self-limiting conditions such as OI may have been previously under-reported.
CASE REPORT: Our case report highlights a rare case of OI presenting with right upper quadrant pain and an acute abdomen. Other differentials for an acute abdomen were considered, including cholecystitis, appendicitis, and pancreatitis. However, with the use of important imaging studies via CT scanning, a rare case of OI was diagnosed. This diagnosis was invaluable information to aid in patient management.
CONCLUSIONS: Our case highlights the importance of a CT scan in diagnosing an acute abdomen, especially to rule out OI, as this diagnostic information can influence appropriate patient management. Most cases of OI can be treated conservatively, as highlighted in our case report.
