Inadvertent Transmission of Polycystic Kidney and Spongy Kidney in Kidney Transplantation

BACKGROUND: Organ transplantations are increasing, and occasionally an unidentified donor disease can be transmitted to the recipient. Kidneys from donors affected by polycystic kidney disease (PKD) were not uncommon. Medullary sponge kidney (MSK) and polycystic disease usually are regarded as distinct diseases and the simultaneous occurrence of both conditions is rare.
CASE REPORT: We report on two patients who received a cadaveric kidney from the same donor; one patient developed PKD, and one patient developed MSK.
CONCLUSIONS: We report one case of inadvertent transmission of PKD and one case of inadvertent transmission of MSK among the two patients who received allografts from the same deceased donor. Both allografts lasted long enough to suggest that polycystic kidney and medullary sponge kidney from deceased donors can be considered for transplant. PKD and MSK may share similar etiology and pathogenesis.
