BACKGROUND: Mustards have been long used throughout history for multiple medical benefits, and it can be utilized in different formulations, which apply its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. One of the commonly used formulations of mustard seeds is paste, which can be applied on the skin for up to 15 min. Longer exposure times can cause serious complications, including burn-like skin manifestations.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 69-year-old man who suffered erythema, skin erosion, and vesicles after applying a mustard plaster for 3 h. He was successfully treated with silver sulfadiazine dressing and close observation.
CONCLUSIONS: This paper sheds the light on the underestimated hazards of using traditional medicines and treatments without proper supervision or control.
