BACKGROUND: After the lifting of legal and religious bans, deceased donor transplantations in Iran have increased. However, the prevalence and incidence of end-stage renal disease have also has increased in Iran in recent years, so there is a need for a donated organ mandate seeking new techniques and protocols like pediatric en bloc kidney transplantation. We report a case of en bloc kidney transplant from a pediatric deceased donor to an adult and long-term follow-up of similar case that we reported before.
CASE REPORT: The deceased pediatric donor was a 30-month-old, 15-kg boy who died because of head trauma after falling. The recipient was a 21-year-old, 45-kg woman with end-stage renal failure secondary to glomerulonephritis, who was on hemodialysis.
CONCLUSIONS: In our limited experiences, pediatric en bloc kidney transplant is feasible and has acceptable short- and long-term outcomes.
